Kylian Mbappe vs Amiens in 2020: What Really Happened?
Kylian Mbappe and Amiens are linked by several memorable meetings during the 2019–20 Ligue 1 season. However, one particular match often causes confusion among football fans: the dramatic 4–4 draw between Amiens and Paris Saint-Germain on February 15, 2020.
Despite the match being associated with Mbappe because of his importance to PSG at the time, Mbappe did not play in that game. The French forward was absent as PSG traveled to Amiens only a few days before their UEFA Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund.
The match itself became one of the most entertaining games of PSG's Ligue 1 campaign.
Amiens vs PSG: The 2020 Match
The game was played on February 15, 2020, at the Stade de la Licorne. PSG entered the match as the Ligue 1 leaders, while Amiens were fighting near the bottom of the table.
What followed was an unexpected eight-goal thriller.
Amiens made a stunning start. Serhou Guirassy opened the scoring in the fifth minute before Gaël Kakuta doubled the home side's advantage in the 29th minute.
Fousseni Diabaté then made it 3–0 in the 40th minute.
PSG finally responded just before halftime when Ander Herrera scored in the 45th minute. The visitors went into the break trailing 3–1.
The second half completely changed the direction of the game.
PSG's Incredible Comeback
PSG came back strongly after the break.
Tanguy Nianzou scored twice, first in the 60th minute and again in the 65th minute. His second goal brought PSG level at 3–3.
With the momentum now on their side, Paris Saint-Germain continued to attack.
In the 74th minute, Mauro Icardi completed the comeback by putting PSG ahead 4–3. The goal appeared to have completed a remarkable turnaround after the visitors had been three goals behind.
But Amiens were not finished.
Deep into stoppage time, Serhou Guirassy scored his second goal of the night to make it 4–4.
The final whistle confirmed a dramatic draw.
According to match statistics, PSG had 71% possession and registered 15 shots, including 10 on target. Amiens had 29% possession and 11 shots, with five on target.
Did Kylian Mbappe Play Against Amiens in February 2020?
This is one of the most important details when discussing “Kylian Mbappe vs Amiens 2020.”
Mbappe did not appear in the February 15, 2020 match between Amiens and PSG. The PSG attack instead featured players such as Mauro Icardi, Edinson Cavani, Ángel Di María and Julian Draxler.
The match was also played just three days before PSG's Champions League trip to Borussia Dortmund, and manager Thomas Tuchel made several changes to his starting lineup. Contemporary reports described the PSG team as heavily rotated.
As a result, there was no Mbappe goal, assist or appearance in this particular 4–4 encounter.
Mbappe Had Already Scored Against Amiens That Season
The confusion may come from another PSG–Amiens match earlier in the same season.
On December 21, 2019, PSG hosted Amiens at the Parc des Princes. Paris Saint-Germain won that match 4–1, and Mbappe scored twice.
His two goals made him one of the key players in PSG's comfortable victory. Match records show that Mbappe played the full 90 minutes and finished the game with two goals.
This means Mbappe's 2019–20 record against Amiens included a memorable two-goal performance, but he was not involved in the famous 4–4 draw two months later.
Why Was Mbappe Missing From the 4–4 Match?
The 4–4 draw was unusual because of the way the score changed.
Amiens looked completely in control after going 3–0 ahead. PSG, however, responded with three goals of their own before taking a 4–3 lead.
For Amiens, Guirassy's late equalizer was particularly important. His second goal prevented PSG from completing one of the biggest comebacks of the Ligue 1 season.
The match also showed the difference between possession and the final result. PSG controlled around 70% of the ball and created more shots, yet they could not leave Amiens with three points.
